Viuda Negra - (Spain)

Viuda Negra logo

Javier is the 5th generation of a family of winemakers from Laguardia, one of the most privileged places in Rioja Alavesa. He was only 17 when he realized his 1st self-produced wine in his father's cellars. In 2013 he decided to start his own project, Bodegas Javier San Pedro Ortega. His wines are divided into 3 different families. Viuda Negra (Black Widow) come from old vineyards from Rioja Alavesa where the strictest standards apply and the highest quality is aimed for. With only modern and quality wines in mind, Javier completely separates himself from the classic, old(er) Rioja style. His wines are jewels that guarantee enormous class and drinking pleasure. One of the rising stars in the world of quality wines!

Dark, cherry-red colour. Expressive aromas of red fruits like strawberry and raspberry accompanied by impressions of violets and liquorice. Due to its aging on inox, the wine enjoys plenty of fraîche and bulges with flavourful fruit. Fresh and pure on the palate. Structure and concentrated fruit keep in perfect balance. Medium-bodied and long finish. Another interpretation of the classic Rioja style.

Beautiful, dark, ruby red colour. In the nose, we find lots of red and black fruit supported by a nice toasted wood touch and a hint of vanilla. We find the same fruit on the palate with impressions of forest fruits, plums, figs and black cherries. More complex notes of caramel, vanilla, cedar and spice emerge in all modesty, letting the fresh fruit shine at all times. The finish confirms and further challenges the palette. An overall and innovative interpretation of what tomorrow's Rioja could stand for.

Shiny light yellow colour with golden reflections. Lively aromas of ripe exotic fruit and yellow blossom accompanied by fine impressions of shaved wood, fine spices, toast, almonds and a hint of honey. The short wood ageing is perfect in support and allows the fruit to shine at all times. Nicely balanced on the palate while on the finish its complexity comes out a little more.

Beautiful, dark, cherry colour. Seductive and intense nose of mainly red fruit and subtle impressions of black fruit. Deliciously delicate and complex with a balance and finesse rarely seen in most Riojas. Despite its concentration, it remains nicely accessible. The finish is long and impressive with velvety soft tannins. Again, Javier radically breaks with ageing Rioja traditions.

Beautiful shiny ruby red colour. Noble aromas of red and black fruit are accompanied by noble impressions of cedar, coffee, cocoa, leather and vanilla. Lovely balance between primary fruit impressions and more complex notes. Despite its intense character, it manifests remarkable elegance and finesse. This perfect balance just continues into the deliciously long finish. Enjoy and continue to enjoy!
